The application review process is beginning, but will likely take some time. We have a large volume of applications to review. Notifications will be sent by email as soon as a decision has been made. Admission is often on a rolling basis, with offers being made, then wait to hear if anyone declines, and if so, more offers are sent out. Notifications will likely go out anytime between early February and May.

Do I need to send any materials to you now?

Applicants to the graduate program do not need to send anything to the department or the Graduate School prior to receiving an admission notice. If you are offered admission, then you will need to have your official transcripts sent directly from the institution you attended to the Graduate School. The department does not require official transcripts.

If you are an international applicant, you will also need to submit proof of financial ability at that time. Do not send any materials to the department or the Graduate School prior to being admitted to the program.

Can I apply for the PhD without a Master’s?

When you fill out the online application, enter Master’s as your Degree Goal, and PhD as your Ultimate Degree Goal. You might want to mention your research interest in your Statement of Purpose and who you would be interested in working with (read the faculty bios on our website to find out about current research) and indicate you are interested in the PhD.

What forms of funding are available?

The most common form of funding is a Research Assistantship (RA). Funding is limited to those interested in doing research and writing a thesis. Master’s students who are interested in continuing to the PhD would have priority. Both domestic and international students are eligible for funding as an RA.

Other forms of funding from the department might include a Teaching Assistantship or fellowship. The department maintains several dedicated fellowships that are distributed based on merit; giving priority to PhD students. All funded master’s students would be on the academic-thesis track with the expectation they would do a thesis.

The online application includes a Financial Aid Questionnaire. If you indicate in the questionnaire that you are requesting funding, you will be considered.

Can I get conditional admission and submit GRE/TOEFL scores later?

No, the department does not allow conditional admission, all application materials must be received before your application will be reviewed. If you want to be considered for funding, it is especially important for your application to be complete by the application deadline, Jan. 10.

The CEE department is in the process of revising some of our admission requirements, and possibly the degrees we offer. We should have more information up on our website in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, we don’t have any specific information at this time, as some of these changes still need to be voted on by the faculty. We apologize we are unable to provide specifics at this time. We plan to make this information available on our website as soon as possible. My suggestion would be to visit our website late in November and see if anything new has been added regarding admission requirements.

What is the Minimum GRE Requirement?

The department does not have a minimum score requirement. The GRE will be taken into consideration when the review committee assesses your ability to succeed in the graduate program. It is an important component of your application. Your entire application will be taken into consideration. Therefore, if your GRE scores are not the best, but the rest of your application is strong (excellent letters of recommendation, good grades, and your application is otherwise strong), then a less than perfect GRE score may not necessarily keep you from being admitted.

Can I apply for any quarter?

The department typically only admits students for autumn quarter. Many of our classes are offered in sequence, so it’s very difficult to start a different quarter.
